As an artist, I hereby state: the three graces and the three fates concoct visual art out of three elements: technique, form, and content.
I think of composition as a puzzle. Using as few values as necessary, (preferably no more than three) I must fit each shape together so that each fulfills its compositional role of establishing a focal point and guiding the viewer throughout the picture. Alberti inspires me in this, when he says: “beauty is that reasoned harmony of all the parts within a body, so that nothing may be added, taken away, or altered, but for the worse.”
For the non-figurative painter, form is content. For the figurative painter - the good one at least - form echoes content.
